AWANA

AWANA

Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed

(2 Tim. 2:15)

Awana began in 1950 as a youth program at the North Side Gospel Center in Chicago, Illinois.  Lance Latham, the church pastor, worked with Art Rorheim to develop a program that would appeal to young people, reach them with the gospel of Christ, and train them in the Lord’s work.  Other churches heard about the success of the Awana program and asked if they could use it.  By 1960, Awana had chartered 900 clubs, and the growth necessitated a move from the church into a headquarters building.

There are currently more than 7,800 churches in the United States that have Awana Clubs.  There are Awana Clubs in all 50 states.  Awana can also be found in over 1,400 churches in more than 90 other countries, from Argentina to Zimbabwe, from Iceland to Australia.

Game Time:  Every Awana Club meeting includes a high-energy Game Time Featuring individual and team competition.  Game Time unleashes kids’ natural energy and enthusiasm.  The Awana Game Circle has universal appeal.  Kids everywhere love Awana games!  Everyone participates.

Handbook Time:  Using achievement-oriented curriculum materials, Awana emphasizes memorization and understanding of key Bible verses.  With a trained leader alongside to encourage and guide, clubbers develop a Bible-based view of how to know and serve God.  Clubbers are rewarded for their achievements as they progress through the handbooks.

Council Time:  The whole club gathers for a Bible message, singing, and announcements for upcoming events.  One highlight of Council Time is the presentation of awards for individual’s handbook progress and team competition.
